Know who you're working with
Registered Dietitian or nutritionist? They're not the same.
"Nutritionist" is not a protected title in most of Canada. "Registered Dietitian" is — and that difference affects the quality and accountability of the advice you receive.
Registered Dietitian (RD)
- Completed an accredited university degree in nutrition or dietetics
- Completed a supervised practicum or internship
- Passed a national licensing exam
- Regulated by a provincial college, with a legal scope of practice
- Can provide medical nutrition therapy for diagnosed conditions
Unregulated titles
- Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN)
- Certified Nutritional Practitioner (CNP)
- RONP, RNCP, ROHP, and similar designations
Note: these can be earned through short, unaccredited courses with no government oversight, no standard curriculum, and no legal accountability for the advice given.

Frequently asked
Common questions about working with a dietitian
What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a nutritionist in Canada?
"Registered Dietitian" is a legally protected title. RDs complete an accredited nutrition degree, a supervised internship, a national licensing exam, and ongoing regulation by a provincial college. Titles like Registered Holistic Nutritionist, CNP, RNCP, ROHP, or RHN are not regulated the same way and don't carry the same scope of practice or accountability.
How do I know I should see a dietitian?
Common reasons include a new health diagnosis, ongoing digestive symptoms, pregnancy or postpartum recovery, disordered eating patterns, recovery from surgery, unexplained fatigue or a suspected deficiency, or simply wanting a personalized plan instead of generic advice.
Does insurance cover dietitian appointments in BC and Alberta?
Often, yes. An estimated 60–70% of employee health benefit plans in Canada include some coverage for registered dietitian services (Dietitians of Canada). We also offer direct billing for Veterans Affairs, ICBC, and WorkSafeBC. Check your specific plan for details on coverage and provider requirements.
Can I see a Wise Eats Nutrition dietitian if I don't live in Parksville?
Yes. Rachel sees BC clients by video province-wide, and Sheirry works with clients across BC and Alberta online. Licensing reciprocity also allows us to support clients in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories.
What happens on a free discovery call?
It's a short, no-obligation conversation about your health history and goals. You'll learn how ongoing sessions work and can ask any questions before deciding whether to book a full appointment.
As many as 60-70%* of employee health benefits plans cover dietitian services.
Health insurance providers recognize that nutrition guidance from a registered dietitian can be instrumental in supporting and improving an individual's health. With their education and training, a dietitian is the right person to learn from about what to eat (as opposed to what not to eat) and to create a personalized plan.
Not sure if a dietitian can help? Here's how to tell.
Nutrition advice online is overwhelming and often contradictory. A Registered Dietitian gives you a personalized, evidence-based plan — built around your health history, your goals, and your life.
